Kaweco

The Heidelberg Pen Factory was founded in 1883 by Carl Luce and Friedrich Enßlen. They produced wooden dip pens and imported fountain pens and gold nibs from A. Morton in New York.  In 1889 the company was taken over by Heinrich Koch and Rudolph Weber who established a new production facility with a workforce of 25 in Handschuhsheim.

Various pen models were produced, one of which was known as the Kaweco, a name taken from the surnames KOch, WEber and COmpany. In 1908 a patent for the Kaweco safety pen was obtained, the model featured an innovative screw thread at the turning knob of the mechanism to prevent ink leakage.  By 1911 Kaweco had expanded its sales network with branches in Berlin, Paris, Zurich and Vienna, as well as representatives in many countries around the world. At this time pocket fountain pens for ladies, officers and sportsmen were offered.  In 1913 A. Morton helps Kaweco set up gold nib production and sends technicians and machines to Germany.  By 1921 the company converted to a stock corporation employing 600 people and producing around 130,000 fountain pens per year. Lever fountain pens were added to production.  In 1930 the Kaweco company name, machines, inventory and patents was bought by a much smaller Baden penholder factory, Knust, Woringen and Grube.  In 1994 H & M Gutberlet gmbh acquired the rights to the name "KAWECO" and launched a new Sport series based on the Kaweco Sport design from 1935. The sophisticated pocket writing instruments were launched as a fountain pen, rollerball, ballpoint pen, mechanical pencil and clutch pencil.

Today, Kaweco writing instruments are available in over 40 countries and their range is constantly expanding. The core of the brand remains classic design and high-quality workmanship. They are seen as one of Europe's premier fountain pen producers. Known for their robust and high-end build specifications, a Kaweco pen will be a long-lasting addition to any fountain pen fan's collection.
